Night Section 1

There are some things that i don't quite understand about the people in the book and how they acted. My first question is why did'nt they listen to Moche The Beadle when he warned them about what was going to happen? Also, when their house maid offered to help them escape and give them a safe home, why didn't the take that opportunity? It could have saved their lives if they had taken the opportunity to go to their maids house. Elie stikes me as kind of wierd for a couple reasons. One is his wanting to become a rabbi, I mean what kind of 12 year old wants to be a rabbi or someone of that nature? Another reason he seems a little wierd to me is that he was happy that they were about to leave because he wanted to get out of the sun. I don't know about you but I think I would rather sit in the sun than be cramed in a cattle car on my way to almost certain death.

Ha, i agree with you on sitting in the sun vs. certain death. I think I'd rather do anything than go to my certain death, as a matter of fact. But I think I know why they didn't go to their maid's house for safety; if they went over to her house, then she might get killed for helping a Jew.

I am pretty sure I dont know any 12 year olds either that want to be a rabbi. That is a bit strange.I think that I would also sit in the sun vs. going into the cattle car!

I don't see why they didn't listen to mochue the beatle either. I mean who wouldn't beileve him if he had been shot. I also agree about rather sitting out in the sun than facing death. But i don't think that they were aware that they were being sent to a death camp.

Well..you do have a good point, but I think that if I was in that situation I wouldn't be going to be like "oh yeah that sounds crazy but he must be right!". Like they had a good life, nice homes, and good families, they just probably didn't think that that was even possible in happening.
